Custom Website Development
We design and build websites from code instead of templates or page builders. You get a fast site that does what your business needs, a simple way to update it, and full ownership of the code, domain, and hosting.
What you get
- A site built around your business, not a theme bent to fit. Pages, navigation, and forms are designed around what visitors come to do.
- Speed by default. Pages are prerendered to static HTML and served from a global CDN, so they load quickly on phones and are built to meet Google’s Core Web Vitals thresholds.
- Search and AI visibility built in: clean URLs, titles and descriptions, a sitemap, structured data, and an llms.txt file for AI assistants. See how to optimize a website for AI search.
- Accessibility checked against WCAG 2.2 AA: semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, and readable contrast.
- Updates without a developer for the content you change often, through a small editor made for that content.
- Ownership. Hosting, domain, and DNS are in your own accounts, and the custom code is yours once it is paid for.
How we build
Sites are written in TypeScript and React, prerendered at build time, and deployed to Cloudflare. Most business and content sites need no server or database, which removes most of the security patching and hosting cost that come with a CMS.
When a site needs dynamic features, such as booking, accounts, a members area, or a searchable archive, we add a small backend for exactly that feature instead of adopting a general-purpose platform.
How a project runs
- Scope. A call about what the site is for, who it serves, and what it must do, written up as a short scope with a fixed price or an hourly estimate.
- Pilot. New clients can start with a first piece of real work at no cost, such as the home page, so you can judge the work before committing.
- Build. Design and development in short cycles, with a preview link you can click through at every step.
- Launch. Domain and DNS, redirects from any old site, analytics, and sitemap submission to Google and Bing.
- After launch. Changes as you need them, billed hourly or as small projects. See website maintenance and support.
When a site builder is the better choice
If you need a simple brochure site and are happy to edit it yourself, Squarespace or Wix can cost less up front. A custom build is the better fit when the site has to do something specific, when speed and search matter, or when you want to own it outright rather than rent it.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a custom website cost?
- It depends on the number of page types and custom features more than the number of pages. We quote per project or hourly, and new clients can start with a free pilot. See pricing.
- How long does a custom website take?
- A site with a handful of page types usually takes a few weeks from scope to launch. Custom features such as booking or accounts add time, and the scope says how much before work starts.
- Can I edit the site myself?
- Yes. Content you update regularly, such as news, events, team members, or services, gets an editor built for it. Text that rarely changes can stay in code, and we update it when you ask.
- Where is the site hosted, and what does hosting cost?
- On Cloudflare, in your own account. Static sites usually fit within Cloudflare's free tier; sites with a database or file storage typically cost about $5 a month on Cloudflare's paid plan.
