What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is making your content easy for AI assistants and AI search features, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Copilot, to find, understand, and cite. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it: most AI answers draw on pages that search engines have already crawled and indexed.

AEO, GEO, and SEO

  • SEO (search engine optimization): ranking pages in traditional search results.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): being the source an AI-generated answer quotes or cites.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): another name for the same goal, used mostly for AI search engines. In practice AEO and GEO describe the same work.

The three overlap heavily. A page that is invisible to search engines is rarely cited by an assistant, so AEO starts where good SEO leaves off.

How AI assistants choose sources

When a question needs current or specific information, an assistant usually runs a web search behind the scenes, reads a handful of the top results, and writes an answer that cites some of them. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Microsoft Copilot all work broadly this way, each on its own search index or a partner’s.

Two things follow. A page that does not rank in the underlying index is rarely read at all. And of the pages an assistant reads, the ones it quotes are those that state the answer plainly, near the top, in a form that can be lifted out whole.

What helps a page get cited

  • Be indexed. Crawlable pages, in both Google and Bing, with AI search crawlers allowed in robots.txt.
  • Answer first. The direct answer in the first sentence or two under a heading that asks the question.
  • Be specific. Numbers, steps, prices, requirements, and conditions. Vague pages give a model nothing to quote.
  • Structure the page. One topic per page, descriptive headings, lists for steps, tables for comparisons, and FAQs in the words people actually use.
  • Be a recognizable entity. The same name, description, and contact details on your site, Google Business Profile, directories, and social profiles, plus Organization structured data.
  • Earn mentions elsewhere. Reviews, listings, and other sites referring to you. Assistants weigh what others say about you, not only what you say.
  • Keep it current. Dates on time-sensitive pages, and updates when the facts change.

What AEO is not

  • Not a replacement for SEO. The same crawlability, indexing, and content quality underpin both.
  • Not a tag or a trick. No file or markup guarantees a citation, including llms.txt.
  • Not measured in rankings. Answers vary by user, wording, and run, so there is no position to track.

How to measure it

  • Referral traffic in analytics from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, and claude.ai.
  • Search Console. Google counts AI Overviews traffic in its regular Performance report rather than breaking it out.
  • A fixed question set. The questions your customers ask, put to the main assistants each month, noting whether and how you are cited.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO?
It has a different goal, being quoted in an answer rather than ranked in a list, but mostly the same foundations. Pages that are crawlable, indexed, specific, and clearly structured do well at both.
Does schema markup help with AEO?
It helps search engines and assistants understand what a page is and who publishes it, but it does not guarantee a citation. For most business sites the useful types are Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, Article, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList. Google no longer shows FAQ rich results for most sites, but FAQPage markup still describes the page.
How long does AEO take to work?
About as long as SEO, because it depends on pages being crawled and ranked. Assistants that search live can cite a page soon after it is indexed; becoming a source they cite regularly takes longer.
Do I need an AEO agency?
Not to start. The basics are well-structured, indexed pages with specific answers, which any site can get right. Every site we build ships with them: prerendered HTML, structured data, a sitemap, and llms.txt. If you want the audit, fixes, and content done for you, see our SEO and AEO services.
